Join us for a very special evening as Lisa D. Gray and Vernon Keeve combine forces and serve up readings alongside music by the ever-so-talented Socorra!
Donations are kindly requested, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Lisa D. Gray reads, writes, and rants about the things that tick her off and amuse her. She follows trends and looks back at how the past affects our present. She grew up in the cold and wintry Connecticut but now makes her home in the unsunniest part of California – the Bay Area. She works on social justice issues, teaches, and believes that all voices deserve spaces and places to be heard. She earned her BA in English from Spelman College and an MFA in English and Creative Writing from Mills College.
Vernon Keeve III is a storyteller from the south, and a west coast trained educator. A recipient of the 2012 Zora Neale Hurston award from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. Vernon also serves as the chair for the Association of Black and Brown Writers and has a full collection of poems and rants scheduled for release from Nomadic Press in 2016.
Socorra is a blues/folk singer-songwriter from San Jose, CA. She is heavily influenced by everyone between Elvis Presley and Sara Bareilles and loves adding percussive elements to her playing. She spent much of her college years at UC Merced, singing at open mic nights and performing at various campus events. After college she went off to the Peace Corps in Morocco from 2010-2012 where part of her explored using music as a way of connecting with her community. She performed around the country from big cities to small villages and taught a music club. She is now preparing to go back to Morocco for a two week tour in November and is currently working on an EP, expected out in 2016.
We have a new bike corral right outside the Workspace, so bike if you can!
There is ample street parking, but just to make it easy, there is an O'Reilly Auto Parts/Walgreens on the corner of Fruitvale and Foothill with a huge parking lot. Here's a Google Map link: https://www.google.com/maps/place/O'Reilly+Auto+Partsfirstname.lastname@example.org,-122.233008,14z/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1so+reilly+auto+parts+near+Foothill+Blvd,+Oakland,+CA!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xa74c9fbc2152bd68
Nomadic Press should show up on that map as well. We are just in between Austin and Rutherford on Foothill.
Hope to see you soon!
